Inauguration of Advanced Viral Research and Diagnostic Facility at Army Hospital to Enhance AFMS Readiness

A cutting-edge Viral Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) was officially opened on December 30, 2025, at Army Hospital (Research & Referral). This development marks a significant enhancement in the Armed Forces Medical Services' (AFMS) readiness to combat new and recurring viral infections.

The facility was inaugurated by Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, who serves as the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS). The VRDL aims to bolster early disease detection, manage outbreak investigations, perform genomic surveillance, and facilitate a One Health-integrated response. This initiative enhances the military's ability to swiftly and effectively address infectious disease threats.

The VRDL is equipped with advanced diagnostic and research capabilities, supporting cutting-edge virology research, specialized training, and real-time surveillance. It will provide vital support for evidence-based decision-making during public health crises. Additionally, the laboratory is essential for tracking viral evolution and transmission patterns, aligning military medical preparedness with both national and international health security protocols.

At the opening event, the DGAFMS also unveiled two significant publications. These include “VIROSCOPE,” a virology newsletter, and “MICROBE HUNTERS,” an antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance bulletin. These publications are designed to share important insights on viral trends and AMR developments, promoting awareness, research collaboration, and informed clinical practices throughout the Armed Forces medical community.

The establishment of the VRDL highlights the AFMS's unwavering commitment to clinical excellence, technological advancement, and innovative healthcare solutions. This initiative further reinforces Army Hospital (R&R)'s status as a national leader in advanced medical diagnostics, research, and training.
