IMA Gentleman Cadet Nishant Dhankhar Dies After Collapsing During Training in Dehradun
A 21-year-old Gentleman Cadet of the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun died on August 15, 2026, days after collapsing during a physical training exercise, leaving his family and Kasni village in Haryana’s Jhajjar district in deep mourning.
The cadet, Nishant Dhankhar, had joined the IMA only about a month earlier and was undergoing officer training at one of the Army’s most prestigious institutions. His death has drawn attention not only because of his age and the short time he spent at the academy, but also because he came from a family with a long and well-known military background.
According to reports, Nishant entered the academy as a regular entry cadet on July 10, 2026. His selection had been a source of pride for his family and for residents of Kasni, where several members of his extended family have served, or continue to serve, in the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.
The incident took place on August 9 during a routine running exercise as part of jungle camp training. Nishant suddenly collapsed and became unconscious while taking part in the physical activity. He was immediately taken to the Military Hospital in Dehradun for treatment.
As his condition worsened, he was shifted for specialised care to the Army Hospital Research and Referral in New Delhi. Some local reports also mentioned medical movement involving Chandigarh during the course of treatment. Despite intensive efforts by doctors, he could not be saved.
Nishant died on Saturday, August 15, reportedly after suffering multiple organ failure. Available reports have cited multiple organ failure as the cause of death. No external injury or trauma linked to a fall has been publicly reported.
He was the only son of his family. His father, Birendra Dhankhar, known locally as Billu, worked as a postman with the postal department. Nishant’s elder sister is serving as a Flying Officer in the Indian Air Force and, according to one report, was posted in Srinagar at the time of the incident. She travelled to be with the family after her brother was hospitalised.
The Dhankhar family’s association with the armed forces spans generations. Nishant’s grandfather, Ram Singh, served in the Indian Army. His uncle, Sunil Dhankhar, is reported to be a Colonel, while another senior family member, Narendra Dhankhar, served in the Indian Air Force and retired as a Flying Officer. In the village, the family is widely recognised for maintaining a military tradition over several generations.
Relatives and villagers described Nishant as someone who had wanted to serve the country from an early age. His selection for officer training at the IMA was seen locally as a continuation of the family’s long connection with the armed forces.
According to a family statement attributed to his uncle Satyendra Dhankhar, Nishant had been selected for the path leading to commissioning as a Lieutenant about four months before he joined the academy. After his death, his mortal remains were brought to Kasni village in Jhajjar district.
His last rites were performed on Sunday, August 16, with full military honours. A Guard of Honour was accorded to the young Gentleman Cadet as family members, military personnel, administrative officials and large numbers of villagers gathered to pay their final respects.
Among those reported to have attended the funeral were Badli MLA Kuldeep Vats, Naib Tehsildar Anshul, Subedar Rajesh from the District Sainik Board and senior Army personnel. People from Kasni and nearby areas also offered floral tributes and stood with the grieving family during the final rites.
The death has left the village in sorrow, particularly because Nishant had only recently begun his training at the Indian Military Academy and was preparing for a future as a commissioned Army officer. For Kasni, the loss is being felt not only as the death of a promising young man, but also as the end of another chapter in a family story closely tied to military service.
