IAF Commends Prayagraj Civilians for Valorous Aircrew Rescue on Republic Day
Prayagraj, January 26, 2026 – During a solemn event commemorating India's 77th Republic Day, the Indian Air Force (IAF) recognized the heroic actions of three local residents from Prayagraj. These individuals were lauded for their bravery in rescuing two aircrew members after a Microlite aircraft made an emergency landing. The ceremony at Air Force Station Bamrauli highlighted the strong cooperation between civilians and the armed forces.
The incident that led to this recognition took place on January 21, 2026. A two-seater IAF Microlite trainer aircraft, on a routine mission from AF Station Bamrauli, encountered a technical issue around 12:15 PM. This forced the aircraft to land in a pond located in an uninhabited wetland near Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The pilots ejected safely, but the difficult terrain required immediate help. Local residents, including Shri Pankaj, Shri Lal Sahab, and Shri Alok Yadav, quickly came to their aid, navigating through the water to ensure the pilots' safety. Videos showing the locals assisting the aircrew in the marshy area went viral, showcasing the community's quick response.
At the Republic Day event, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) of AF Station Bamrauli honored the three individuals with certificates and mementos, in the presence of station staff. The AOC praised their selfless actions and thanked the broader Prayagraj community for their role in the aircraft's recovery. The rescued aircrew members also attended the ceremony, expressing their deep appreciation to their rescuers. This occasion underscored the strong bond and mutual respect between the community and the Indian Armed Forces.
A court of inquiry has been established to determine the cause of the technical failure that resulted in the emergency landing. Fortunately, there were no injuries or property damage, and the IAF has highlighted the safety measures that ensured the pilots' safety.
