Born on March 3, 1976, in Kalol Bakain village, Bilaspur district, Himachal Pradesh, Sanjay Kumar comes from a humble Dogra family. His parents, Durga Ram and Bhag Devi, instilled a strong sense of perseverance and duty. After completing his secondary education at Government Senior Secondary School, Kalol, he moved to New Delhi, where he worked as a taxi driver. Influenced by his uncle in the Indian Army and a brother in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Kumar aspired to military service. Despite facing initial rejections, he persevered and joined the 13th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles as a Rifleman on June 26, 1996.
Kumar's heroism was most evident during the Kargil War in 1999, specifically in Operation Vijay. On July 4, 1999, he volunteered as a scout for a mission to capture Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley, a crucial position held by enemy forces. Under challenging conditions, Kumar's team faced intense machine-gun fire from an enemy bunker, halting their progress.
Exhibiting remarkable bravery, Kumar crawled through a flanking route under heavy fire, sustaining bullet wounds to his chest and forearm. Despite profuse bleeding, he engaged in close combat, killing three enemy soldiers in the first bunker and capturing their Universal Machine Gun. He then attacked a second bunker, further motivating his platoon to secure the position. The official citation for his PVC honors his actions as displaying exceptional gallantry and dedication, epitomizing the spirit of the Indian soldier.
In recognition of his bravery, Kumar was awarded the Param Vir Chakra on Independence Day 1999, India's highest wartime gallantry award. His accolades include the Wound Medal, Special Service Medal, Operation Vijay Star, and several other medals for long service and United Nations missions.
Kumar's career reflects his unwavering commitment. Promoted to Havildar on January 26, 2000, he later advanced to Naib Subedar in July 2014, Subedar, and then Subedar Major in February 2022, serving as an instructor at the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla, Pune. On August 15, 2025, he was elevated to the honorary rank of Lieutenant, followed by his recent promotion to Honorary Captain in 2026. On India's 79th Independence Day in 2025, he received the Sena Medal (Gallantry) for his ongoing service.
A brief controversy in 2010 involving a temporary demotion to Lance Naik was resolved with intervention, leading to his subsequent promotions. Kumar's legacy is commemorated through a statue at Param Yodha Sthal in Delhi, an island named Sanjay Dweep in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in 2021, and his depiction in the film LOC Kargil by actor Sunil Shetty.
