Havildar K G George, a distinguished Vir Chakra recipient and veteran of the 1965 India-Pakistan War, died at the age of 95 at his home in Kottayam, Kerala, on Saturday morning. He was the last surviving Vir Chakra awardee from the Corps of Signals.
Gallantry in the 1965 War
Havildar George served in the 50 (Independent) Parachute Brigade Signal Company, where he was instrumental as a lineman responsible for ensuring battlefield communication during combat operations.
During the 1965 conflict between India and Pakistan, particularly in the Wagah sector, communication lines between the Brigade Headquarters and forward battalions were frequently disrupted due to heavy shelling and air attacks by enemy forces.
Despite these challenges, Havildar George led his team in restoring the communication links, which allowed commanders to maintain coordination with frontline units during the engagement.
Courage Under Heavy Enemy Fire
As per the official citation, between September 6 and September 10, 1965, George exhibited remarkable bravery while repairing crucial communication lines amidst continuous enemy fire.
On the night of September 8-9, during an intense enemy assault, he risked his life to re-establish a vital communication link between the Brigade Headquarters and forward battalions.
This restored line was essential for the coordination and control of operations, playing a significant role in the brigade's efforts during the battle.
Awarded the Vir Chakra
For his exceptional bravery, dedication, and perseverance in hostile conditions, Havildar K G George was honored with the Vir Chakra, one of India's most prestigious wartime gallantry awards.
