HAL to Handover Tejas Trainer, HTT-40 and Dhruv NG Helicopters in Bengaluru on Sept 18

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will hand over three indigenous aircraft platforms in Bengaluru on September 18, including LCA Tejas Final Operational Clearance (FOC) twin-seater trainer aircraft and HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft for the Indian Air Force, as well as Dhruv Next Generation (NG) helicopters for Pawan Hans Limited.

The ceremony brings together officials from India’s defence and civil aviation establishments and is being positioned as a public demonstration of the country’s growing aerospace manufacturing base. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu are scheduled to attend, alongside Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar, Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha and HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Indian Air Force, Pawan Hans, regulatory bodies and the aerospace and defence industry are also expected to participate in the event, which will take place at HAL’s facility in Bengaluru.

The handover of the Tejas twin-seater trainer is especially relevant for the Indian Air Force’s training pipeline. The aircraft is intended to support training and conversion activities related to the Tejas fighter programme, giving pilots a platform to move from basic instruction to more advanced flying on an indigenous combat aircraft system. It also feeds into the wider ecosystem built around India’s light combat aircraft programme.

Along with the Tejas trainers, HAL will deliver HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft to the Air Force. The HTT-40 is meant for the earliest stage of military flying instruction and is a core part of the pilot training infrastructure. Its induction is significant because basic trainer aircraft sit at the foundation of military aviation training, and a domestic platform offers the armed forces greater control over training requirements and long-term support.

The HTT-40 has become an important programme within India’s broader indigenous aerospace push. As a training aircraft designed and manufactured in the country, it reflects efforts to expand domestic capability not only in aircraft production but also in the industrial expertise required for design, development, systems integration, maintenance and support.

The third platform in the handover is the Dhruv Next Generation helicopter, which will be transferred to Pawan Hans Limited. Unlike the aircraft being delivered to the Air Force, the Dhruv NG is being handed over to a civil aviation operator, highlighting the potential for India’s indigenous aerospace products to serve both military and non-military requirements.

Pawan Hans operates helicopter services that are used for connectivity and specialised aviation support, making the availability of a domestically developed platform relevant to the development of India’s rotary-wing sector. The handover therefore extends the reach of indigenous aerospace manufacturing beyond defence use and into civil aviation operations.

By bringing together a combat trainer, a basic trainer and a helicopter platform in one ceremony, HAL is effectively showcasing the range of aircraft categories now being addressed by Indian industry. The event reflects how domestic aerospace production is being positioned to meet requirements across the aviation spectrum, from military pilot training to civil helicopter services.

The Ministry of Defence has described the occasion as a milestone in India’s drive for self-reliance in aerospace and defence manufacturing. According to the ministry, the platforms being handed over illustrate the growing capability of HAL and its industry partners to design, develop and manufacture aircraft and helicopters for both military and civil applications.

The government has linked these inductions to a wider effort to cut dependence on foreign sources and strengthen domestic aerospace capability. That effort goes beyond building aircraft; it also involves creating and sustaining the ecosystem needed to support aviation platforms over their full life cycle.

For the Indian Air Force, the availability of more indigenous training aircraft is important because pilot training progresses through distinct stages before aviators move on to advanced operational platforms. Aircraft such as the Tejas trainer and HTT-40 occupy critical positions in that sequence, helping shape the next generation of military pilots within a domestic aviation framework.

For the civil aviation sector, the Dhruv NG handover to Pawan Hans also carries symbolic and practical value. It demonstrates that helicopters developed in India can be supplied to civil operators, strengthening the case for wider use of indigenous rotary-wing platforms in the country’s aviation services.

The presence of senior officials from both the defence and civil aviation ministries underlines the increasingly interconnected nature of India’s aerospace industry. Technologies, manufacturing processes and supply chains developed for one segment of the sector can often support the other, making the Bengaluru event a showcase for a combined national capability rather than a single programme.

For HAL, the September 18 handover will be a visible reminder of the company’s role in moving indigenous design efforts into operational use. For the government, it is another opportunity to highlight the push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat in aerospace and defence manufacturing, with domestic platforms now being placed at the centre of both military training and civil aviation requirements.
