HAL to Deliver Initial Tejas Mk-1A Fighter Jets in October Despite Engine Supply Delays

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to deliver the initial two units of the LCA Tejas Mk-1A aircraft in October, overcoming delays in engine deliveries from the United States, as confirmed by sources.
A senior official stated that ten aircraft have already been constructed and tested, with the inaugural delivery scheduled for October. A jet from Nashik is prepared for handover.
Engine Supply Bottleneck
HAL has encountered setbacks in acquiring GE F404 engines from the US, yet expects two additional engines this month to sustain production. Thus far, 10 F414 engines have been received, and a larger agreement for 113 F404 engines, intended for powering 97 more Mk-1As, has been finalized. Sources indicated that only the contract signing remains, which is anticipated soon, following clearance by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS).
Weapons Integration Success
The Tejas Mk-1A has achieved success in weapons integration trials, which included live tests of the Astra beyond-visual-range missile and the ASRAM short-range missile. These advancements significantly boost the aircraft's combat capabilities as it is gradually inducted into the Indian Air Force.
Future Roadmap
The delivery of 83 Mk-1As is now projected to occur by 2029, a delay of four quarters from the initial timeline. The more advanced LCA Mk-2 is expected to be launched in 2027. HAL is also advancing the upgrade of 15 Su-30MKI fighters for the Indian Air Force, reinforcing its significant role in India's defense aerospace sector.
According to officials, production efforts remain stable, despite HAL investigating recent defects reported in the Coast Guard's ALH Dhruv fleet. The inquiry is anticipated to conclude this month.
