HAL Commences MRO Hub Construction in Missamari, Bolstering Eastern Theatre Army Aviation

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) marked a key development on January 22, 2026, by laying the foundation stone for a new Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) Hub at Missamari in Assam. This initiative is aimed at bolstering indigenous defense support infrastructure and advancing Army Aviation capabilities in India's Eastern Theatre.

This move is in alignment with the Indian Government's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, targeting enhanced aircraft availability. It also seeks to reduce reliance on foreign MRO providers and ensure quicker operational turnaround in regions characterized by challenging terrain and harsh weather conditions.

At the ceremony, Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Gajraj Corps, engaged in discussions with PB Rangarao, Chief Executive Officer of HAL Helicopter Complex. They concentrated on improving the serviceability of Army Aviation helicopters, especially those operating in high-altitude and forward areas, through expanded MRO infrastructure and faster maintenance processes.

The project was officially initiated with the joint unveiling of the foundation stone by the GOC of Blazing Sword Division and PB Rangarao.

The new MRO Hub in Missamari is set to offer comprehensive maintenance and overhaul services not just to Army Aviation platforms but also to Indian Air Force aircraft operating in the region. It aims to significantly cut down maintenance turnaround time and improve logistics, thereby enhancing combat readiness and rapid response capabilities along India's northeastern borders.

Located strategically near key Army airbases and forward operating locations, the facility is expected to minimize aircraft transit delays, ensuring their quicker return to service.

HAL's Helicopter Complex, which already supports platforms like the ALH Dhruv and Cheetah/Chetak helicopters, will be central to the operations of the new hub. The facility will boast modern diagnostic tools, modular repair bays, and a trained technical workforce, focusing on avionics, engines, rotors, and airframes.

Additionally, the project is poised to boost local employment, with a focus on training technicians from Assam in advanced aerospace maintenance, thus fostering a self-sustaining regional defense maintenance ecosystem.

The MRO Hub is anticipated to become operational within 18 to 24 months, with a phased commissioning plan. Once fully operational, it is expected to service more than 100 aircraft annually, potentially reducing downtime by up to 40 percent, according to HAL benchmarks.

This project goes beyond mere infrastructure; it represents strategic foresight in the face of evolving regional security challenges, particularly amid heightened military activity along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). It underscores HAL's pivotal role in India's defense industry and highlights the Indian Army's commitment to technology-driven logistics and sustained operational excellence.

Building on HAL's recent MRO expansions across India, the Missamari Hub is poised to serve as a model for future defense maintenance hubs, reinforcing India's determination to secure its defense preparedness through indigenous capability and innovation.
