HAL Affirms Continued Use of GE F414 Engine in TEJAS MK-2 Fighter Development

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has confirmed that the TEJAS MK-2 fighter jet is being specifically engineered to integrate the GE F414 turbofan engine, dismissing recent rumors suggesting the consideration of French engines as alternatives.
HAL Chairman DK Sunil emphasized that the airframe, weight distribution, cooling systems, and thrust parameters of the TEJAS MK-2 are all optimized for the F414 engine. He noted that opting for a different engine would necessitate significant redesign efforts and could lead to delays in the prototype rollout and induction timeline. Sunil underscored the company's confidence in the established reliability of GE's turbofan technology.
In response to recent reports hinting at potential French propulsion solutions, Sunil clarified that these assertions lack basis. He highlighted that the F414 engine's deep integration into Indian fighter programs ensures consistent performance, allowing HAL to adhere to its developmental and induction schedules.
Regarding concerns over international trade tensions, including U.S. tariffs on Indian products, HAL asserted that the Indo-U.S. defense cooperation remains unaffected. The current agreements ensure a consistent supply of F414 engines for the TEJAS MK-2 and support local manufacturing initiatives under the Atmanirbhar Bharat framework.
This statement underscores India's commitment to achieving self-reliance in combat aircraft development while utilizing established international technologies, thereby ensuring operational dependability and a secure long-term supply for the Indian Air Force.
