Government Approves Tenure Extension for CDS General Anil Chauhan Until May 2026

The government has authorized an extension for Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan's tenure, allowing him to remain in his position until May 30, 2026, or until further notice.

This decision was made public by the Ministry of Defence after receiving approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). General Chauhan, who also holds the role of Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, was initially appointed to this post on September 28, 2022. He is the second person to occupy the CDS position following General Bipin Rawat.

General Chauhan began his military career with his commission in the Indian Army in 1981. Throughout his career, he has occupied numerous significant operational and staff roles. His dedication and leadership have been recognized with several honors, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.

The extension of his tenure is seen as a move to maintain stability in the top military leadership as India continues to prioritize jointness, modernization, and strategic readiness within its armed forces.
