Goa Shipyard Unveils ICGS ATAL: New Fast Patrol Vessel Enhances Indian Coast Guard Fleet

On July 29, 2025, Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) officially launched the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) ATAL, a Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV), at a ceremony in Vasco-da-Gama, Goa. This vessel represents the sixth in a series of eight FPVs that GSL, a leading Defence Public Sector Undertaking operating under the Ministry of Defence, is building indigenously.

The FPV, designed by GSL, measures 52 meters in length and 8 meters in width, with a displacement of 320 tonnes. These vessels are crafted to perform coastal patrols, protect islands, secure offshore assets, and undertake missions critical to national security, including anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and search and rescue operations. This contributes significantly to enhancing India's maritime domain awareness.

During the launch, GSL Chairman and Managing Director Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay highlighted the launch of ICGS ATAL as a testament to the spirit of indigenization and innovation by Team GSL, especially amid global supply chain challenges. Chief guest Shri Rozy Agarwal, Principal Internal Financial Advisor at Coast Guard Headquarters, commended GSL’s execution capabilities and its significant role in strengthening national maritime security.

The event was attended by senior officials from the Indian Coast Guard, Indian Navy, Ministry of Defence, and key industry partners. This launch is a notable step in India's continuous efforts toward self-reliance in defense manufacturing, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
