General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of the Army Staff, recently paid a crucial visit to the forward posts of the 17 Mountain Division, widely recognized as the Black Cat Division, situated in the Eastern Sector along the Line of Actual Control. This division, based in Gangtok, is tasked with securing Sikkim's borders, operating in some of the world's most challenging high-altitude terrains.
Throughout his visit, General Dwivedi received detailed briefings from formation commanders regarding the current operational conditions, the division's preparedness, and ongoing projects intended to boost combat capabilities through technological advancements and infrastructure improvements. A significant aspect of the visit was the live showcase of domestically developed unmanned aerial vehicles. These drones, part of India's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, are being increasingly utilized for real-time surveillance, reconnaissance, and situational awareness in the tough mountainous regions.

Addressing the troops stationed in these remote locations, General Dwivedi expressed deep admiration for their exceptional professionalism, resilience, and steadfast commitment to duty despite facing extreme weather, high-altitude challenges, and operational demands. He highlighted the vital role of the Black Cat Division soldiers in maintaining vigilance along this critical frontier and praised their contributions to national security.

General Dwivedi reaffirmed the Indian Army's dedication to modernizing its forces by embracing cutting-edge technologies, including drones, AI-enabled systems, and advanced communication networks, to ensure supremacy in current and future combat scenarios. He also stressed the necessity of ongoing training and innovation to address evolving threats in the area.

With a history dating back to World War II, where it earned its unique insignia for its fierce combat prowess in the Burma Campaign, the Black Cat Division continues to uphold the highest traditions of the Indian Army. The COAS's visit highlights the leadership's commitment to troop welfare, operational excellence, and preparedness in protecting India's eastern borders.
The Additional Directorate General of Public Information, Indian Army, provided photographs and updates on the visit, showcasing the high morale and combat efficiency of the formation.
