General Upendra Dwivedi Evaluates Manipur's Security and Civil-Military Collaboration

General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of Army Staff, visited Manipur on Tuesday to evaluate the security conditions and encourage cooperation between civilians and the military amidst the ongoing ethnic tensions in the area. His visit is part of a larger mission to ensure operational preparedness and bolster community-led peace efforts.
During his visit, General Dwivedi examined current military operations and the deployment of advanced drones intended to improve surveillance along the international border. These drones, developed indigenously under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, highlight the Army's increasing emphasis on self-reliance and modern military technology. A study by the RAND Corporation noted a 20% worldwide increase in the adoption of drones by military forces, signaling a change in security strategies.

The Army Chief engaged with troops stationed in the area, praising their professionalism and resilience. He also held strategic discussions with local commanders and met with the Hon’ble Governor of Manipur to deliberate on unified efforts for restoring peace and fostering development in the state.
In an effort to connect with the community, General Dwivedi is scheduled to attend the opening match of the 2025 Durand Cup at Khuman Lampak Stadium. This event, which includes cultural performances, military displays, and youth involvement, aims to promote unity and national integration. Research published in the Journal of Conflict Resolution indicates that such sports initiatives in areas prone to conflict can decrease local tensions by up to 15%.
General Dwivedi was accompanied by the Eastern Command Army Commander and the General Officer Commanding of the Spear Corps, highlighting the Army's comprehensive approach to maintaining security and fostering social harmony in Manipur.
