GE Aerospace Establishes Engine Repair Facility in India for Tejas Mk1A Jets, Enhancing IAF Operational Readiness

GE Aerospace has revealed plans to set up a dedicated engine repair facility in India for the HAL Tejas Mk1A fighter jets, a move aimed at boosting the operational readiness of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

This facility will handle the maintenance and repair of F404-IN20 engines, which are used to power the Tejas Mk1A aircraft.

The plant will be operated by the IAF, with GE Aerospace offering technical expertise, training, support personnel, and specialized equipment.

The establishment of this facility is anticipated to achieve several key objectives:

Benefits
Eliminate dependence on overseas repair facilities
Reduce turnaround time for engine servicing
Enhance fleet availability and combat readiness

This development arises amid ongoing delays in engine deliveries. Under a 2021 agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), GE was supposed to supply 99 F404-IN20 engines. However, only a few have been delivered, leading to delays in the induction of Tejas Mk1A jets.

The initial schedule for the Tejas Mk1A deliveries set for 2024 has now been pushed to begin around mid-2026.

The Tejas programme holds strategic importance for the IAF, as it is intended to replace older fleets, including MiG-21 and Jaguar aircraft. With the current squadron strength below the desired level, the timely induction and maintenance of indigenous fighters are critical.

The new repair facility supports India’s push for defence indigenisation and self-reliance, ensuring improved lifecycle support for domestically produced platforms.

This initiative is projected to strengthen India’s aerospace ecosystem and provide long-term support for the Tejas programme, which is central to the nation’s defence modernization strategy.
