Future Officer Abhishek Sajwan: Overcoming Rejections to Join Indian Army via OTA Chennai

Junior Under Officer (JUO) Abhishek Sajwan, from Kot, Chamba in Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, is set to be commissioned into the Indian Army at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai. This significant milestone will occur during the Passing Out Parade on September 6, 2025. Abhishek's journey from a farmer's family to the prestigious grounds of OTA reflects a narrative marked by determination and a commitment to serving the nation.

Abhishek's leadership potential first emerged during his time with the National Cadet Corps (NCC) where he served as a Senior Under Officer (SUO). He holds a Master’s degree in Defence and Strategic Studies. His experiences in the NCC, including an Army attachment with an Armoured Regiment and participation in a National Integration Camp, were pivotal in shaping his military ambitions.

The path to the academy was fraught with challenges. Despite facing several rejections while attempting to join the armed forces, Abhishek remained steadfast in his goals. Supporting his family was a priority, leading him to work in Decathlon’s Mountaineering Section. There, he honed qualities such as resilience and teamwork. Inspired by his maternal uncle, a veteran of the 5 Garhwal Rifles, Abhishek expanded his skills by mastering activities like mountaineering and kayaking, and completed a 100-kilometer ultra-marathon, enhancing his physical and mental endurance.

Abhishek's perseverance paid off when he achieved an All India Rank of 51 through the NCC Special Entry Scheme, earning him a place at OTA Chennai. The academy, which has grown from 500 to 750 cadets since 1999, now includes Abhishek among its promising future officers.

On September 6, 2025, Abhishek will participate in the Passing Out Parade in Chennai, marking his official transition from cadet to officer. This event is a source of immense pride for his family, his village, and the entire state, symbolizing the realization of a long-held aspiration.

Abhishek's journey is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Indian Army, showcasing how perseverance and talent from rural areas contribute to the emergence of future leaders. His story serves as an inspiration to many young Indians who dream of donning the olive green uniform.
