DRDO Proposes 28 Indigenous Weapons for Urgent Military Acquisition

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has put forth a detailed list of 28 domestically developed weapon systems for urgent procurement by India's armed forces. This move aims to boost military preparedness amid increasing security threats, including those stemming from current operations such as Operation Sindoor.
The emergency procurement initiative is designed to expedite the usual acquisition procedures, allowing for the delivery of essential systems within a timeframe of 3 to 6 months. This strategy aligns with the government's broader Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which focuses on rapid indigenization and achieving self-sufficiency in the defence sector.
The systems on offer cover a diverse array of capabilities, encompassing advanced missile systems, combat vehicles, electronic warfare tools, and unmanned platforms. DRDO's offerings include well-known systems such as the Arjun Main Battle Tank, Prithvi and Astra missiles, Nag and HELINA anti-tank systems, and UAVs like Rustom. These technologies are currently in active service or are progressing through various stages of deployment and mass production.
Particularly noteworthy is the Very Short Range Air Defence System - Next Generation (VSHORADS-NG), set to replace the older Russian-origin Igla-1M. This man-portable air defence system features cutting-edge infrared homing technology, a range of 6 kilometers, and is optimized for performance in high-altitude and challenging weather conditions. The Indian Army has already commenced procurement of this system as part of its modernization strategy.
The DRDO's emergency offerings arrive at a time when the Indian military anticipates swift acquisitions valued at approximately ₹40,000 crore to address immediate needs under Operation Sindoor. These procurements are being collaboratively managed by all three military services and defence finance officials to ensure transparent and efficient implementation.
This initiative underscores India's strategic objective to lessen reliance on foreign defence imports while empowering its domestic defence industry. By equipping the armed forces with high-performance indigenous systems on a fast-tracked schedule, India is enhancing both its operational capabilities and technological independence.
