DRDO Launches Vikram VT-21 Combat Vehicles: Indian Army Induction Set for 2029
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has introduced two new infantry combat vehicle (ICV) platforms under the 'Vikram VT-21' programme. These platforms, available in both tracked and wheeled versions, represent a significant advancement in modernising the Indian Army's mechanised infantry capabilities.
This initiative is set to replace the ageing BMP-2 vehicles, which have long served as a crucial component of the Army's mechanised units but are now considered insufficient to meet current battlefield demands.
Developed by DRDO’s Vehicle Research and Development Establishment (VRDE) alongside private industry partners, the Vikram VT-21 features over 30 state-of-the-art systems. Key advancements include AI-driven target tracking, advanced terrain-mapping, increased mobility and firepower, the capability to deploy Nag Mark 2 anti-tank guided missiles, domestically developed specialised 30mm ammunition, and amphibious capabilities for water crossings.
The design of the vehicle draws inspiration from global platforms such as Russia's Kurganets-25, Germany's Puma IFV, and South Korea's K21. It can accommodate up to 11 personnel, offering enhanced ergonomics and onboard systems.
DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat highlighted that the new platforms will undergo extensive trials both in-house and with users. These tests will cover various terrains and weather conditions, aiming for induction into the Indian Army by 2029.
This project underscores a solid public-private partnership in defence manufacturing, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Core technologies are set to be transferred to Indian industry for production, reflecting a commitment to self-reliance in defence.
The Vikram VT-21 is anticipated to substantially boost the Indian Army’s mechanised infantry capabilities, enhancing battlefield survivability and lethality, thereby preparing the forces for future technology-driven warfare.
