DRDO Develops Indigenous Signal Star Naval Flare for Kalvari-Class Submarines, Boosts Indian Navy's Self-Reliance

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has made notable progress in boosting India's naval self-sufficiency with the successful development of a signal star naval flare for Kalvari-class submarines. Created by DRDO’s High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) in Pune, this system was officially transferred to the Director General – Naval Armament Inspection (DG-NAI) on Saturday.

This flare serves as a specialised underwater pyrotechnic communication device aimed at improving submarine safety and tactical communication. Once launched from a submarine's signal ejector, it rises to the water's surface and activates through a hydrostatic mechanism, emitting a high-intensity star-like light that remains visible over large distances, even during adverse weather conditions or nighttime.

The flare boasts a dual-colour functionality:

Color Purpose
Red light For distress, emergency, or urgent tactical communication.
Green light For identification, recognition, or coordinated fleet maneuvers.

Designed with a pressure-resistant casing, the flare can endure extreme underwater pressures, ensuring reliable performance during deep-sea operations. Its durability and long shelf-life make it useful not only in combat situations but also during peacetime activities such as fleet training, rescue missions, and identifying friendly vessels.

The indigenisation of this crucial naval system removes India's reliance on foreign suppliers, thereby closing a significant gap in submarine operations. Officials have highlighted that this development represents a major achievement under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, reinforcing India's pursuit of self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

According to DRDO officials, "The induction of the signal star naval flare enhances both the Navy’s operational readiness and India’s strategic autonomy." They also noted that this accomplishment underscores indigenous expertise in advanced pyrotechnics, material science, and naval warfare technology.
