Dharali Cloudburst Triggers Devastating Floods in Uttarkashi, Several Soldiers Missing

A sudden cloudburst struck Dharali on Tuesday, sending torrents of water, rocks, and debris through the narrow Himalayan valley. This natural disaster swept away homes, roads, and infrastructure. Witnesses captured footage showing floodwaters and mud engulfing buildings while residents sought safety on higher ground. Several houses were submerged under thick layers of sludge.

Despite the loss of their own personnel, Indian Army troops have joined forces with the NDRF, SDRF, and local authorities to carry out search, rescue, and relief operations. Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya indicated that the number of casualties might increase as teams work to clear debris and access isolated areas.

The Central Command of the Indian Army identified Dharali as one of the worst-affected locations, with a substantial mudslide exacerbating the flood damage. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and stated that the government is closely monitoring the situation, ensuring that relief efforts are operating at full capacity.

Uttarakhand's location within the vulnerable Himalayan region makes it particularly susceptible to cloudbursts, landslides, and glacial floods. Experts attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of such disasters to climate change and unregulated development. Authorities have issued a high alert, urging residents in high-risk areas to evacuate or remain vigilant as more rain is anticipated in the coming days.
