Commodore R Venkatesan Takes Over Leadership of Indian Navy's Centre for Indigenisation and Self-Reliance

Commodore R Venkatesan officially took over as the Director of the Centre for Indigenisation and Self-Reliance (CISR) in Coimbatore on January 12, 2026. This marks a significant leadership change at the Indian Navy's central unit dedicated to promoting indigenisation efforts.

With a solid background as an engineer officer, Commodore Venkatesan is an alumnus of the Naval College of Engineering, IIT Kharagpur, and the Naval War College. He brings a wealth of operational and administrative experience from various naval institutions.

Commodore Venkatesan has held key positions at sea, including his role as Engineer Officer on three Indian Navy warships. On land, he has served in various critical staff roles at Naval Headquarters, Eastern Naval Command, Andaman and Nicobar Command, and within naval repair facilities, research and development agencies, as well as trial and training units and the material organisation.

The Centre for Indigenisation and Self-Reliance acts as the Indian Navy’s primary field unit, leading efforts to support the indigenous design, development, and production of defense equipment, aligning with national goals for self-reliance.

The appointment of Commodore Venkatesan is anticipated to enhance the Navy’s indigenisation initiatives, encourage stronger partnerships with industry and academia, and expedite the development of technologically advanced, domestically produced naval systems.
