Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, Renowned Kargil War Hero, Dies of Heart Attack

Colonel Sonam Wangchuk (Retd.), a recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra and a distinguished figure in the 1999 Kargil War, passed away on April 10, 2026, due to a heart attack. Known as the "Lion of Ladakh" for his valor and strategic prowess during Operation Vijay, his contributions are widely celebrated.

Reports indicate that Colonel Wangchuk suffered a sudden cardiac arrest early in the morning. The news of his passing was initially shared by senior Indian Army veteran Yogendra Kumar Joshi, who expressed profound grief and honored the courageous soldier's legacy.

Renowned as one of India's most decorated war veterans, Colonel Wangchuk played a pivotal role in the initial phases of the Kargil War in 1999. After being commissioned into the Indian Army in 1987, he served with the 4th Battalion of the Assam Regiment and later with the Ladakh Scouts, where he gained significant respect for his expertise in high-altitude warfare.

During the night of May 30-31, 1999, Major Wangchuk led a small unit of Ladakh Scouts on a challenging mission at Chorbat La, located at an altitude of over 5,000 meters. Despite harsh weather and the lack of artillery support, his team executed a successful flanking maneuver against a fortified enemy position, achieving one of the first key victories for Indian forces during the conflict.

His exceptional bravery, leadership, and dedication in the face of adversity earned him the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second-highest wartime gallantry award. His actions remain a standard for battlefield leadership and valor.

Born on May 11, 1964, in Sankar village of Leh district in Ladakh, Colonel Wangchuk dedicated over 30 years to military service before retiring in 2018. Following his retirement, he continued to be a revered figure, frequently sharing his experiences in public forums while leading a modest and respectful life.

The news of his death has led to widespread tributes across the nation, particularly from the defense community and in Ladakh, where he is celebrated not only as a war hero but as an embodiment of courage, modesty, and steadfast service to the country.
