Colonel Noreen Shanet John: Trailblazing Leadership in the Indian Army

Colonel Noreen Shanet John has made history by becoming the first female officer to lead an Agniveer training battalion at the Madras Engineering Group & Centre in Bengaluru. Her appointment, which began in early 2023, is a significant step in the Indian Army's initiative to broaden leadership roles for women in both operational and training capacities.

This development holds particular significance as it occurs at MEG & Centre, one of India's oldest military institutions, with over two centuries of history. Known as the regimental base for the Madras Sappers, the centre is pivotal in developing combat engineers and training recruits under the Agnipath scheme.

Colonel John is now at the helm of training Agniveers—young recruits enlisted for short-term service—by imparting them with technical skills, battlefield engineering knowledge, discipline, and operational readiness.

Her path to this landmark position began during her time at Providence Women’s College in Kozhikode, Kerala, where she excelled as a cadet in the National Cadet Corps. She was recognized as the second-best cadet in the All India Best Cadet Competition at the Republic Day Camp in 1989 and was named the best parade commander in 1993. A pivotal moment in her early career was commanding the Combined Guard of Honour for Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao during the Prime Minister’s Rally.

Her international perspective was broadened further through her involvement in the Indo-Canada Youth Exchange Programme in 1993–94. These early experiences established a strong foundation of discipline, confidence, and leadership that would guide her military trajectory.

Commissioned into the Corps of Engineers on March 7, 1998, Colonel John has dedicated over 26 years to the Indian Army in various operational, instructional, and leadership roles. Her career progression is marked by merit and professional excellence. One of her notable roles was as a Senior Group Testing Officer at the 14 Services Selection Board in Prayagraj, where she was instrumental in evaluating and selecting future officers for the armed forces.

In January 2020, she received a Permanent Commission, reflecting the broader trend of including women officers in long-term service roles. Her promotion to Colonel (Select Grade) in January 2023 further validated her leadership capabilities.

Her role at MEG & Centre signifies more than a personal achievement; it reflects a transformative shift in the Indian Army's approach to integrating women into command roles, particularly those critical to training combat soldiers. With the Agnipath scheme changing recruitment by introducing younger personnel for short-term service, the task of training these recruits is both challenging and strategically important.

Under her leadership, Agniveers receive rigorous physical training, technical education, and discipline-focused instruction to prepare them for varied operational settings. Her responsibility is to ensure that this new generation of soldiers is not only skilled but also committed to the Indian Army's core values of duty, honour, and selfless service.

Colonel John is married to Colonel Monish Dass, VSM (Retired), who also served in the Corps of Engineers. Their shared military background underscores a partnership rooted in an understanding of the demands and ethos of military life.

Colonel Noreen Shanet John’s rise from a distinguished NCC cadet to a pioneering commanding officer exemplifies how determination, skill, and dedication can challenge traditional boundaries. Her leadership is enhancing the operational capabilities of the Corps of Engineers and inspiring a new generation of women to consider careers in the armed forces.

As the Indian military continues to evolve, her story emphasizes a fundamental truth: leadership is defined by ability, not gender.
