Colonel Krishan Singh Rawat and the 36-Hour Line of Control Operation: A Para SF Legacy

Colonel Krishan Singh Rawat, a recipient of the Shaurya Chakra and Sena Medal, is one such standout figure. As part of the 1st Battalion of the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), also known as 1 PARA (SF), Colonel Rawat's military career is marked by numerous counter-terrorism operations and high-stakes missions along the Line of Control (LoC).

Born on March 25, 1985, in Bhikyasain, Uttarakhand, Colonel Rawat's formative years were spent in Delhi, where he attended Green Fields School and Navyug School, Sarojini Nagar. Influenced by a family with ties to the defense sector, including a father who served at the Integrated Defence Headquarters, Rawat pursued a military career, eventually joining the Indian Army. He volunteered for the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), a unit known for its rigorous selection and demanding training.

The journey to becoming a Para Special Forces officer is notoriously challenging, involving training in airborne operations, combat diving, and unconventional warfare among other skills. Colonel Rawat quickly distinguished himself, earning the Sena Medal for Gallantry in 2010 during his tenure as a Major. This accolade, along with a Mention in Despatches, highlighted his exceptional performance in various deployments.

Colonel Rawat's career includes prestigious international qualifications, as evidenced by photographs showing him with the US Army Ranger Tab, Combat Diver Badge, US Paratrooper Wings, and Indian Army parachute and free-fall credentials. A pivotal moment in his career occurred in December 2019 during a counter-infiltration mission along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir. Then a Lieutenant Colonel, he led a Special Forces team aiming to thwart terrorist infiltration. The team, acting on intelligence, set up an ambush and waited in harsh conditions for 36 hours. The mission demanded exceptional endurance and tactical precision.

Upon engagement, Colonel Rawat displayed exemplary leadership, maneuvering his team tactically and directing a squad commander to advance under fire, resulting in the elimination of two terrorists. As the situation escalated, he repositioned his team to maintain an advantage, personally engaging and neutralizing additional threats. His leadership ensured mission success and prevented further infiltration.

Colonel Rawat's gallantry during this operation earned him the Shaurya Chakra, India's third-highest peacetime gallantry award. Announced in August 2020 and presented by President Ram Nath Kovind in November 2021, the award recognized his leadership and bravery under enemy fire, marking it as a significant Special Forces operation in recent history.

After these operational successes, Colonel Rawat assumed command of 1 PARA (Special Forces), one of the Indian Army's most decorated battalions. As Commanding Officer, he exemplified the regiment's ethos of leadership and commitment. His dedication was evident when he personally ensured the dignified return of Lance Naik Praveen Sharma's remains following an operation, demonstrating the commitment expected from Special Forces leaders.
