Colonel Bhupinder Shahi Recognized for Enhancing Military Realism in Bollywood Films with Veteran Achievers Award

New Delhi, February 25, 2026 – At a ceremony celebrating outstanding post-retirement contributions, Colonel Bhupinder Shahi (Retd), a former Infantry officer of distinction, was honored with the Veteran Achievers Award by Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi. The accolade, awarded during the Retiring Officers Seminar, acknowledges Shahi's pivotal efforts in ensuring accurate portrayals of the Indian Armed Forces in Bollywood films, notably in the recent spy-action movie Dhurandhar, alongside his ongoing dedication to veterans' welfare.

Shahi's involvement in Dhurandhar was crucial, as he used his vast military knowledge to inject authenticity into the film's portrayal of intelligence operations and military procedures. Commissioned into the 15th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in 1991, Shahi spent over 20 years in some of India's toughest operational settings. His service history includes counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir, assignments in Ladakh and Kargil, two missions on the Siachen Glacier, and a period with the prestigious National Security Guard for anti-terror operations. As a third-generation Army officer, Shahi's profound insight into military life has greatly benefitted his consultancy role following his early retirement in 2017.

After retiring, Shahi initially explored adventure tourism before transitioning into the film industry as a military consultant. His cinematic journey commenced with the highly praised film Shershaah, drawing from his personal experiences with Captain Vikram Batra during the 1999 Kargil War. The success of Shershaah led to further engagements, and Dhurandhar marks his ninth film project as a consultant. He has worked with notable directors like Nikhil Advani and Ram Madhwani, and production houses such as Dharma Productions and Colour Yellow Productions. His other advisory roles include films like Kill, Veda, Freedom at Midnight, Waking of a Nation, and Fauj.

In Dhurandhar, which centers on a prolonged Indian intelligence operation involving an undercover agent in Karachi's criminal underworld, Shahi ensured military aspects were depicted with precision and deference. Invited by executive producer Rahul Gandhi in 2024, Shahi secured vital permissions from the Indian Army and Indian Air Force, allowing the use of MI-17 and Cheetah helicopters for filming. Given his extensive service in Ladakh, Shahi was able to offer valuable insights for the realistic staging of scenes in this familiar region.

Apart from logistical contributions, Shahi's role extended to training actors in key military skills such as battlecraft, fieldcraft, communication protocols, and appropriate body language. He also advised the production team on broader aspects of military culture, including the chain of command, unit cohesion, and soldiers' psychological mindset. Highlighting his role, Shahi remarked, "On set, the military consultant becomes the moral compass and technical expert—training actors in battlecraft, fieldcraft, communication protocols, body language, and guiding filmmakers through military culture, chain of command, unit cohesion, and the psychology of a soldier." He emphasized the film's authenticity, stating, "It is an authentic film and everything depicted actually happened," underscoring its foundation in real events.

Shahi's contributions ensured the armed forces were portrayed positively, aligning with his commitment to preserving the military's dignity in popular media. He explained, "My task essentially was to help the movie producers get the requisite permissions from the Army and the Indian Air Force (IAF), making sure that the script portrays the Army in the right way, and there is no negativity of armed forces. The scenes that involve the military must look authentic and realistic."

The Veteran Achievers Award also recognizes Shahi's broader impact on veterans' welfare and youth empowerment. He was one of four honorees at the ceremony, alongside Lieutenant Colonel Harbir Singh (Retd) for social welfare and youth initiatives, Subedar (Honorary Lieutenant) Dnyadeo Kondiba More (Retd) for educational and sports mentoring, and Subedar (Honorary Captain) Darshan Singh (Retd) for providing legal aid to veterans. Upon receiving the award, Shahi expressed his gratitude, stating, "It was a motivating force for all those veterans who continue to serve the nation after retirement."

Looking forward, Shahi remains active in the industry, with his advisory role extending to the upcoming sequel Dhurandhar 2, expected for release in March 2026. His work exemplifies how retired military personnel can continue to contribute to national narratives, bridging the gap between real-world service and cinematic representation.
