CISF Jawan Ashok Kumar Ghadei Killed by Coal Train at NTPC Farakka MGR Line

Sahibganj in Jharkhand witnessed a fatal accident on Thursday morning when a 47-year-old Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawan, Ashok Kumar Ghadei, was run over by a coal-laden goods train on the Farakka-Lalmatia Merry-Go-Round (MGR) railway line while on duty at NTPC Farakka.

According to Sahibganj Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Singh, Ghadei was serving on a coal train that was moving from Lalmatia in Godda district to the NTPC Farakka power plant in West Bengal. During routine patrolling, he stepped down from the train to deal with a vacuum-related problem involving the train’s brake system, and was then struck by the wheels, suffering severe injuries.

Local reports said the body was found between Chutiya, also referred to as Chutia, and Kunwarpur along the MGR line. The jawan sustained a serious head injury and a severed thigh. He was rushed to the Barharwa Community Health Centre, where doctors declared him brought dead. His body was later sent to Rajmahal Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The CISF Commandant informed SP Amit Kumar Singh about the incident. Police teams, including personnel from Ranga Thana, reached the spot soon after. An investigation is now underway to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the accident.

CISF personnel are regularly deployed on coal-bearing freight trains running on the NTPC-owned and operated Farakka-Lalmatia MGR route. The closed-loop system does not form part of the Indian Railways network. Their presence is meant to prevent coal theft during transport from Eastern Coalfields Limited’s Rajmahal coal project at Lalmatia to the Farakka thermal power station.

The death has left the CISF unit at NTPC Farakka in mourning. Officials have not yet shared further details about Ghadei’s rank, service history or family.
