CISF Constable Allegedly Slashed in New Delhi Protest; Delhi Police Book 4 FIRs, 18 Arrested

New Delhi, October 5: A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable was allegedly attacked with a knife during a National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) protest in central Delhi on Monday, prompting the Delhi Police to register multiple cases and begin legal proceedings in connection with the incident.

The injured officer has been identified as Constable Bikram Kumar, who was deployed at the protest site for law-and-order duty. Police said he was allegedly attacked while he was taking a protester away from near a barricade. He suffered a minor injury to his right elbow, was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital for medical examination, and was later discharged after treatment.

Speaking to reporters, Bikram Kumar said the assailant appeared to have aimed at his neck. “I was taking the protester from near the barricade, and then he slashed me with the knife. It was intended to slash near my neck, but I was saved, and instead it slashed my hand,” he said, according to PTI.

The protest was organised by the NSUI, the student wing of the Congress, which had demanded the resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The group levelled allegations of irregularities in the electoral process, including those linked to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Protesters staged a symbolic “living dead” demonstration near the NSUI headquarters on Raisina Road and later attempted to move towards Jantar Mantar.

The demonstration was led by NSUI national president Vinod Jakhar. Participants carried placards and raised slogans including “vote ki chori nahi chalegi, janta ki awaaz nahi dabegi”.

Police said four First Information Reports have been registered in connection with the alleged violence in the Parliament Street area. The cases relate to the alleged attack on the CISF constable, rioting, defacement, and obstruction of public servants in the discharge of their duties.

Eighteen people were arrested in connection with the alleged violence and produced before court. The protester accused of attacking the constable has been detained, and legal action has been initiated against him as well.

Delhi Police said it is examining CCTV footage and other evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine the role of individual protesters. Officials added that further legal action would follow based on the findings of the investigation.

The incident took place amid heightened security arrangements at public demonstrations in the national capital, where Delhi Police and central forces such as the CISF are routinely deployed at sensitive locations.
