CBI Files FIR Against Ex-SSB Officer Amit Over Alleged Smuggling Nexus on Indo-Nepal Border
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against former Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Assistant Commandant Amit, also referred to as Amit Kumar in some reports, over allegations that he developed a nexus with smugglers to help facilitate large-scale cross-border smuggling along the Indo-Nepal border.
The FIR also names unidentified public servants and private individuals. According to the agency, the alleged conduct took place while Amit was posted with the 20th Battalion of the SSB in Sitamarhi, Bihar, between March 2023 and January 2026. He is accused of working with notorious smugglers from Raxaul and nearby areas to enable smuggling through the Bhangaha Border Outpost (BOP), allegedly in return for undue benefits.
The Indo-Nepal border, which is open in nature at several points, has long been associated with the movement of goods such as gold, drugs and consumer items. The CBI case is centred on allegations that this vulnerability may have been exploited with the alleged involvement of a serving border officer.
Investigators have pointed to several suspicious financial transactions involving bank accounts held by the officer and members of his family. The agency says it found substantial cash deposits made through cash deposit machines and is examining whether Amit accumulated illicit wealth during his service. The probe is also looking into allegations that he acquired significant property in his home state of Haryana before leaving government service.
The FIR has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections relating to criminal conspiracy, as well as under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
After the case was registered, CBI teams carried out searches at locations linked to Amit in Sonipat, Haryana, including Vikas Nagar Colony. During the searches, investigators seized documents related to property purchases and bank accounts. Those records are now being examined to identify the source of funds, determine whether the properties are disproportionate to known income, and trace any connection to the alleged smuggling network during his posting on the border.
The investigation is still underway. The CBI is scrutinising duty records from the 20th Battalion, possible links at Bhangaha BOP, the role of other individuals mentioned in the FIR, and the complete financial trail. The allegations have not been proven in court.
The case comes amid wider efforts to curb corruption and smuggling facilitation along the Indo-Nepal border, which is primarily guarded by the SSB.
