CBI Arrests Srinagar Municipal Ward Officer Sheikh Jameel Mohammad for Allegedly Taking ₹10,000 Bribe

Srinagar, October 15, 2026: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested a ward officer of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) after allegedly catching him red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹10,000 in Srinagar.

The officer has been identified as Sheikh Jameel Mohammad, who was holding charge of Ward 18 (Safakadal). According to officials, the CBI laid a trap after receiving a complaint and apprehended him while he was allegedly taking the bribe amount. Some reports have referred to him as Jameel Ahmad Sheikh; contemporaneous coverage indicates the two names refer to the same person.

The agency has registered a case at the CBI Police Station, Srinagar, under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Initial reports did not disclose the precise nature of the complaint or the official work for which the money was allegedly demanded.

The arrest adds to a series of CBI actions in Srinagar targeting alleged corruption within the municipal corporation. Earlier this year, the agency had carried out similar trap operations and registered cases involving other SMC personnel in connection with alleged bribe demands linked to official clearances and the processing of bills.

The investigation is still in progress. The public in Jammu and Kashmir has been advised to report any demands for bribes by public servants to the CBI or the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
