Captain Smit Machchhar Pilot Who Saved Lives May Get Ashok Chakra

Captain Smit Machchhar, the Mumbai-born flydubai commander who was stabbed in the cockpit of Flight FZ1073 and still opened the flight-deck door so that passengers and crew could restrain his attacker, is being widely spoken of as a candidate for the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry decoration. No official recommendation has yet been announced. The comparison being drawn in public discussion is with Neerja Bhanot, the Pan Am purser posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra for her conduct during the 1986 hijacking of Flight 73.

The incident

On 30 September 2026, flydubai Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 registered A6-FKF, departed Dubai International for Ben Gurion Airport, Tel Aviv, with 174 passengers, including 27 children. Captain Machchhar, an Indian national, was pilot-in-command. The first officer was an Omani national.

According to Israeli officials, passenger accounts, and flight-tracking data, the first officer attacked the captain with a knife as the aircraft approached Israeli airspace and appeared to attempt to crash the jet and damage flight instruments. Between 05:22:07 and 05:22:36 UTC the aircraft dropped from about 30,875 feet to 16,750 feet — a loss of roughly 14,125 feet in 29 seconds. Broader tracking showed a descent of more than 17,000 feet from a cruise altitude near 34,000 feet amid violent altitude swings. The transponder was set first to 7700 (general emergency) and then to 7500 (unlawful interference). Israeli fighters were scrambled.

Despite serious stab wounds to the head and hands, and while bleeding heavily on the cockpit floor, Captain Machchhar fought back and released the cockpit door. Passengers and crew then entered. Passenger Yaniv Hayun, a plumber with an aviation background, restrained the attacker; an Israeli dentist, Shota Musayev, gave first aid. Two off-duty flydubai pilots travelling in the cabin took control. Tabuk air traffic control received a distress call at about 08:44 local time. The aircraft landed safely at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Airport, Tabuk, at about 09:45. All passengers were accounted for and were later flown to Israel. The first officer was arrested by Saudi authorities. The UAE aviation regulator, together with Saudi and Israeli authorities, is investigating. Flydubai has described the event as an onboard incident and cautioned against premature speculation.

India’s Embassy in Riyadh stated that Captain Machchhar underwent treatment, including surgery, and was in stable condition. His parents travelled to Saudi Arabia.

Career

Captain Machchhar, 39, grew up in a business family in Ghatkopar East, Mumbai, and is a father of two living in Dubai. He initially studied textile engineering with the intention of joining the family trade, then pursued management at Mumbai’s Welingkar Institute. An aviation seminar at the age of 19 changed his course. He completed commercial pilot training in New Zealand and obtained his Boeing 737 type rating at the Flight Safety Training Centre, Manesar.

He joined SpiceJet in June 2011 and remained for about 11 years, rising to senior commander and, from November 2020, Line Training Captain, a role involving the training and assessment of other pilots. His record lists more than 6,400 hours as pilot-in-command with SpiceJet. In June 2022 he joined flydubai as a direct-entry captain. His profile records about 9,750 hours on the Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8/9, and more than 13 years of commercial flying. His brother also flies for flydubai. Colleagues have described him as calm, sober, and willing to learn.

Responding to the Prime Minister’s message, he wrote that he had simply been doing his duty as a pilot, to protect the lives entrusted to him, and closed with “Jai Hind.”

Recognition

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him a hero, stating that despite serious injury he had shown immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect others, and that his valour had helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy. The Prime Minister later spoke to Captain Machchhar’s wife and parents and assured them that Indian missions were extending all assistance.

President Droupadi Murmu praised his heroic courage and presence of mind. The Vice-President, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also saluted his conduct. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that, despite being stabbed and seriously injured, Captain Machchhar had fought back, opened the cockpit door, and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker, thereby preventing a catastrophic mid-air disaster and saving 174 lives. United States President Donald Trump likewise described him as a hero. SpiceJet publicly acknowledged his former service and his courage.

The Ashoka Chakra question

The Ashoka Chakra is awarded for the most conspicuous bravery, or a daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, other than in the face of the enemy. It is open to service personnel and to civilians, and ranks as the peacetime equivalent of the Param Vir Chakra. Awards are announced on Republic Day and Independence Day.

Public commentary, including calls on social media, has urged that Captain Machchhar be considered for the decoration, citing an act beyond the ordinary call of duty that averted a mass-casualty disaster. The parallel most often cited is Neerja Bhanot. In September 1986, as senior purser on Pan Am Flight 73 at Karachi, she alerted the cockpit so the pilots could escape, hid the passports of American passengers, and was killed while shielding passengers during the hijackers’ firing. She was awarded the Ashoka Chakra posthumously in 1987, the youngest recipient of the decoration.

Whether a similar honour will follow in this case is a matter for the Government of India. Eligibility is not confined to the armed forces, and civilian bravery of this order has been recognised before. As of 1 October 2026, however, there has been no official announcement that a gallantry award has been recommended or approved. What is on record is the sequence of the emergency, the captain’s actions while wounded, the safe landing of all on board, and the statements of the Prime Minister of India and the Prime Minister of Israel.
