BRO Constructs World’s Highest Motorable Road in Ladakh, Setting New Record

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has achieved another remarkable feat by constructing the world's highest motorable road at Mig La Pass in Leh district, Ladakh, reaching an altitude of 19,400 feet. This new accomplishment surpasses the BRO's former Guinness World Record set at Umling La, which stood at 19,024 feet.
This newly completed section is part of the Likaru–Mig La–Fukche road alignment and was officially opened with a flag-hoisting ceremony led by Brigadier Vishal Srivastava, Chief Engineer of Project Himank. The Indian tricolour and BRO flags were raised at Mig La Pass to commemorate this historic milestone.

The road serves as a third critical route from Hanle to Fukche, a remote border village near the India-China frontier. This enhanced connectivity is expected to significantly bolster military logistics and provide improved access and development opportunities in the high-altitude region.
The BRO has announced that its teams have constructed 11 of the world's 14 highest motorable passes, solidifying its status as a leader in high-altitude road engineering. In addition to its strategic importance, Mig La Pass is anticipated to attract adventure enthusiasts and tourists, offering stunning views of the Indus Valley and challenging terrains.
Since its inception in 1960 under the Ministry of Defence, the BRO has been instrumental in developing strategic road networks in India's border areas and in friendly neighboring countries.
Some of its major accomplishments include:
Constructing over 60,000 km of roads and more than 1,000 bridges in challenging terrains. |
Building the Atal Tunnel, the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet, ensuring year-round connectivity to Ladakh. |
Executing infrastructure projects in countries such as Afghanistan, Bhutan, and Myanmar. |
Providing vital support during natural disasters, aiding in rescue and rehabilitation operations. |
With the successful completion of this new high-altitude road, the BRO has once more demonstrated its exceptional engineering capabilities and its dedication to enhancing India's strategic readiness while promoting development and tourism in the remote Himalayan regions.
