Bihar Regiment Mourns Death of Lieutenant Colonel Rajat Kumar Tripathy at 48
The Bihar Regiment has mourned the death of Lieutenant Colonel Rajat Kumar Tripathy, a veteran Indian Army officer who served for more than 26 years and died on September 9, 2026, at the age of 48.
Born on August 6, 1978, Lt Col Tripathy was commissioned into 5 BIHAR on June 24, 2000. Over the course of his career, he served in a range of operational and instructional appointments, building a reputation within the regiment as an officer who combined field experience with training responsibilities.
His service included postings at the Bihar Regimental Centre in Danapur and at MINTSD, Pune, where he worked as an instructor. In these roles, he contributed to the professional development of fellow personnel and to the wider training ecosystem of the regiment.
Lt Col Tripathy also served outside India. In 2005, he was deployed with 10 BIHAR as part of the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, known as MONUC. The assignment placed him in an international peacekeeping role representing the Indian Army.
At the time of his death, he was serving as the Joint Director of the Regional Centre, Chennai, under the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS). The appointment reflected the continued breadth of his service, extending beyond active operational and instructional duties into the welfare domain for veterans.
Remembering him as a “dedicated soldier” and an “inspiring leader,” the Bihar Regimental fraternity said Lt Col Tripathy had upheld the highest traditions of the Indian Army throughout his career.
The regiment expressed condolences and prayers for his family. He is survived by his wife and son.
His passing has left the Bihar Regiment fraternity mourning an officer whose career spanned operational service, instructional roles, peacekeeping deployment and ex-servicemen welfare responsibilities, all over a period of more than two and a half decades.
