Assam Rifles Facilitates National Integration Tour at Shillong DGAR Headquarters

On September 12, 2025, the Assam Rifles celebrated a noteworthy moment in its 15-day National Integration Tour as participants from civil society organizations in Moreh, Tengnoupal, and surrounding regions of Manipur visited the Directorate General Assam Rifles (DGAR) Headquarters in Shillong. During the visit, Lt. Gen. Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General of Assam Rifles, engaged with the guests, discussing the crucial role the force plays in ensuring national security and fostering community relationships.

Initiated in 2006, the tour seeks to unify the diverse communities of Northeast India. Participants had the opportunity to meet Lt. Gen. Lakhera, who took command in August 2024, bringing with him a rich background in counterinsurgency operations in the region. The event featured cultural interactions, including the ceremonial presentation of a shawl, symbolizing mutual respect and cooperation.

Known as the "Sentinels of the Northeast," the Assam Rifles have been responsible for securing the India-Myanmar border since 2002. A 2019-2020 Ministry of Home Affairs report noted the force's strength at 46 battalions and 65,143 personnel. Their critical role in maintaining stability in regions recently impacted by ethnic strife, such as Manipur, highlights their importance. Established from the Cachar Levy of 1835, the force has a history of contributions, including post-1950 Assam earthquake reconstruction efforts, as both a paramilitary and combat-ready unit.

The engagement underscored the Assam Rifles' dedication to promoting unity and peace, resonating with its longstanding role in community engagement and national integration. The tour continues to build connections between communities, supporting the "Unity in Diversity" ethos in Northeast India.
