The incident took place on March 21, 2026, in the vicinity of Soojimalai Viewpoint, where the individual, named Shivagurunathan, accidentally fell into the gorge while trying to take a selfie.

When initial rescue attempts by local authorities did not succeed, the Indian Army and a medical unit were summoned. On arrival, Major Kavitha volunteered to descend into the gorge, accepting the dangers posed by the darkness, rugged terrain, and potential wildlife threats.

Utilizing ropes, she cautiously descended and reached the unconscious victim around 11:30 pm. With the victim suffering from multiple injuries, low blood pressure, and a risk of hypothermia, she promptly provided critical first aid to stabilize his condition.

After hours of coordinated effort, the team successfully evacuated the victim on a stretcher by approximately 4 am, concluding a 14-hour rescue mission.

Major Kavitha's experience as a trained mountaineer was instrumental in the operation. She has previously engaged in high-altitude rescue missions and holds a record for rafting over 1,000 km along the Brahmaputra River.

The operation involved close collaboration with the civil administration, including the Nilgiris District Collector and Police, ensuring the rescue proceeded smoothly.

Major Kavitha’s actions exemplify the highest standards of the Indian Army, highlighting courage, selflessness, and an unwavering dedication to saving lives.

Her courageous efforts serve as a powerful reminder of the Armed Forces’ commitment not only to defense but also to humanitarian and rescue operations.
