Army Chief General Dwivedi Meets President Murmu Prior to Retirement
General Upendra Dwivedi, the outgoing Chief of the Army Staff, visited President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on June 17, 2026, as he prepares to retire later this month.
He was joined by his wife, Mrs. Sunita Dwivedi, for the courtesy meeting with the President, who serves as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
The President's Office shared information about the meeting through an official announcement, confirming that General Dwivedi and Mrs. Dwivedi had visited President Murmu at the presidential residence.
This meeting comes as General Dwivedi nears the end of his role as Chief of the Army Staff, with his retirement set for June 30, 2026, marking the conclusion of a distinguished four-decade military career.
On June 13, 2026, the Government announced that Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth would succeed General Dwivedi as the next Chief of the Army Staff, with plans for him to take command on June 30 following the retirement.
General Dwivedi's tenure was marked by significant efforts in operational, modernization, and capability enhancement initiatives, all aimed at bolstering the Indian Army's combat readiness for future challenges.
The meeting with the President is part of a long-standing military tradition, where outgoing service chiefs pay a courtesy call to the President before stepping down from their leadership roles.
General Dwivedi emphasized operational preparedness, technological advancements, inter-service cooperation, and the welfare of soldiers and veterans during his tenure, steering the Army through a changing security landscape.
With Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth set to take command, the Indian Army is poised to continue its mission of protecting national security and interests under new leadership.
