Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor Appointed Vice Chief of the Air Staff, Indian Air Force, Effective January 1, 2026
Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor is set to take over as the Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS) of the Indian Air Force on January 1, 2026, signifying a significant leadership transition within the service.
Currently, he holds the position of Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) at the South Western Air Command (SWAC), where he has garnered extensive experience in operations, command, and combat leadership.

Earlier this year, Air Marshal Kapoor was honored with the Sarvottam Yudha Seva Medal (SYSM) for his outstanding leadership during Operation Sindoor. As AOC-in-C of SWAC, he directed air operations between May 6 and 10, 2025, during which the Indian Air Force executed several targeted strikes on Pakistani air bases, causing substantial damage and enhancing India's deterrent stance.
Commissioned into the Fighter stream of the Indian Air Force on December 6, 1986, Air Marshal Kapoor is recognized as a Qualified Flying Instructor and Fighter Combat Leader. He boasts over 3,400 flying hours on various frontline aircraft.
His educational background includes an impressive list of premier military institutions such as the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College, and the National Defence College, showcasing his blend of operational expertise and strategic insight.
In his new role as Vice Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor is anticipated to significantly influence force structure, capability development, operational planning, and modernization efforts, as the Indian Air Force evolves amidst shifting regional and global security landscapes.
His appointment highlights the Indian Air Force's focus on leadership that has been tested in combat, along with joint operations and strategic vision at the highest echelons of command.
