Air Marshal A.K. Bharti Honours Heroes at National War Memorial on Retirement
Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar (A.K.) Bharti, SYSM, AVSM, VM, concluded his nearly four-decade service in the Indian Air Force (IAF) with a solemn ceremony at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. On the occasion of his retirement, he honored the nation's fallen heroes by laying a wreath, paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the country's safety.
In a gesture of deep respect, Air Marshal Bharti laid the wreath at the memorial, reflecting on the valor of countless soldiers who dedicated themselves to defending the nation. Commissioned into the fighter stream on 13 June 1987, Air Marshal Bharti's career is marked by his remarkable achievements as a fighter pilot and operational commander. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College, and National Defence College, he has combined practical operational experience with strategic leadership throughout his tenure.
Air Marshal Bharti, recognized as a Fighter Combat Leader, led several significant operational units. He was the Flight Commander of a Sukhoi Su-30MKI squadron before commanding the notable No. 30 Squadron, playing a crucial role in the operational deployment of one of the IAF's frontline aircraft. He also commanded the 2 Wing at Lohegaon, served as the Senior Air Staff Officer at Central Air Command, and held the prominent position of Director General of Air Operations (DGAO).
In his role as Director General of Air Operations, Air Marshal Bharti was instrumental in boosting the IAF's operational readiness, developing doctrines, and enhancing combat capabilities. His tenure saw efforts to integrate advanced weapon systems, refine operational strategies, and strengthen India's air power amid a dynamic security landscape.
On 1 June 2025, he took on the role of Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, a senior position at Air Headquarters. In this capacity, he contributed significantly to strategic planning, force modernization, and capability development, aiding in the transformation of the IAF into a technologically advanced and future-ready aerospace force.
Throughout his career, Air Marshal Bharti was deeply involved in major operational exercises, including Exercise Gagan Shakti and international exercises such as Exercise Indradhanush with the Royal Air Force and Exercise Garuda with the French Air and Space Force. Under his guidance, operational units consistently demonstrated exceptional performance and maintained high standards of flying safety and combat readiness.
His service has been recognized through numerous honors, including the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and Vayu Sena Medal, celebrating his significant contributions to operational excellence and national security. Additionally, he received commendations from the Chief of Air Staff for his exemplary flying safety record while operating frontline fighter aircraft.
