Agniveer Kulbir Singh Awarded Sena Medal for Gallantry: A Milestone for Agnipath Scheme

In a landmark event for the Indian Army and the Agnipath recruitment initiative, Agniveer Kulbir Singh from the 7th Sikh Light Infantry has been honored with the Sena Medal (Gallantry) for his outstanding bravery in thwarting a terrorist infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC).

Kulbir Singh has become the first Agniveer to receive a gallantry medal, marking a pivotal achievement for the Agnipath scheme. The accolade was bestowed during the Army Day Investiture Ceremony in Jaipur, coinciding with the 78th Army Day celebrations.

General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff, presented the medal, acknowledging Agniveer Kulbir Singh’s valor, quick thinking, and decisive actions in a perilous operational scenario.

According to official reports, the courageous incident occurred in January 2025, when Agniveer Kulbir Singh was stationed at a forward Indian Army post along the LoC. During his watch, terrorists attempted to infiltrate Indian territory under the guise of challenging terrain and low visibility.

Exhibiting extraordinary vigilance and bravery, Kulbir Singh quickly engaged the infiltrators with his Light Machine Gun (LMG). His precise and sustained fire compelled the terrorists to halt their attempt and withdraw, thereby averting a potential security breach.

His prompt response not only secured the post but also showcased combat readiness and professional excellence under severe pressure.

The investiture ceremony took place on January 15, 2026, in Jaipur, where the Army Chief awarded the Sena Medal (Gallantry) to ten soldiers for acts of extraordinary bravery. Additionally, several Army units received citations and acknowledgments, with 26 units recognized for their remarkable performance during Operation Sindoor.

Agniveer Kulbir Singh’s recognition is significant as 2026 marks the completion of four years of service for the inaugural batch of Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath scheme, launched in 2022.

Under the scheme:

25% of Agniveers will be selected for permanent induction as regular soldiers based on merit, discipline, and performance.
The remaining 75% will transition to civilian life, with reservation and employment opportunities in police forces, paramilitary organizations, and defense-related industries.

Kulbir Singh’s gallantry has bolstered confidence in the Agnipath model, illustrating that Agniveers are fully capable of undertaking frontline combat duties with courage and professionalism.

The award of a gallantry medal to an Agniveer is widely regarded as a historic and symbolic event, underscoring the Indian Army’s focus on merit, bravery, and operational excellence, irrespective of the recruitment method.

Agniveer Kulbir Singh’s courageous act serves as an inspiration for young aspirants nationwide and highlights the Indian Army’s enduring spirit of valor in protecting the nation’s borders.
