21-Year-Old Impersonator Detained for Posing as Brigadier in Shahjahanpur Cantonment
A 21-year-old man from Shahjahanpur, identified as Aryan Verma, has been detained for allegedly impersonating a Brigadier in the Indian Army, sparking concerns about the misuse of military identity. Verma was apprehended during a sting operation at the Shaheed Sangrahalaya within the Shahjahanpur Cantonment area.
Officials report that Aryan Verma traveled through the city and nearby regions in a private Tata Harrier SUV, which was equipped with a Brigadier’s one-star insignia and the Army Headquarters flag. Accompanied by two hired bouncers, whom he introduced as National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, Verma portrayed himself as a senior Army officer.
Originally from Durga Enclave Colony in Roza, Shahjahanpur, Verma had been living in Delhi preparing for competitive exams. After twice failing the NEET examination, he shifted his focus to Army recruitment. In January 2026, he informed his family and community that he was appointed as a Brigadier in the Indian Army’s “RN Brigade” and stationed at the Command Hospital in Chandigarh.
Verma began wearing the ceremonial uniform of a Brigadier and interacted with the public under this false identity. Around May 26, he hired two bouncers at a daily rate of ₹2,000 and traveled around the city in his modified vehicle bearing military symbols.
The deception came to light when two ex-servicemen, Satish Singh Chauhan and Sudesh Mishra, became suspicious of Verma's unlikely claim of being a Brigadier at such a young age. His use of private security and military insignia on a personal vehicle further fueled their doubts.
The veterans arranged to meet Aryan Verma at the Shaheed Sangrahalaya, ostensibly for counseling aspiring armed forces candidates, and alerted the Station Commander, Colonel Bharat Singh. The Army had reportedly been monitoring Verma since April following reports of his appearances in Brigadier attire at the cantonment.

On Friday morning, Verma arrived at the museum in full Brigadier uniform, traveling in the marked SUV with his bouncers. He was immediately detained by Army personnel as part of the operation.
Authorities recovered several questionable items during the operation, including:
A fake government identity card
An identity card suspected to bear the forged seal of the Dean of Armed Forces Medical College
An Army regimental cane
A fake pistol
An Army Intelligence team from Bareilly is conducting the preliminary investigation. The team is interrogating Verma to uncover his motives, the source of the counterfeit documents and uniform, and to determine if he acted alone or with accomplices.

Superintendent of Police, Shahjahanpur, Saurabh Dixit, confirmed Verma's detention. He stated, “Army authorities are currently interrogating the accused. Once their inquiry is complete and custody is transferred to the police, an FIR will be registered under relevant sections, and a thorough investigation will be conducted.”
Aryan Verma’s father, Anil Verma, is a Horticulture Inspector, and his mother, Manoja Devi, is a teacher in the Basic Education Department.
This incident underscores the necessity of vigilance against individuals exploiting military identities and symbols. Such actions not only damage the integrity of the institution but also risk misleading the public and abusing the respect given to military personnel.
Further information is awaited as the investigation continues.
