White House Affirms Impending US-India Trade Agreement, Highlights Strategic Alliance

The White House confirmed on Monday that a much-anticipated trade agreement between the United States and India is approaching completion, with officials indicating that an announcement may be forthcoming. This development comes as the two countries work to strengthen strategic and economic connections amid evolving dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region.
At a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described India as a "very strategic ally" and confirmed that US President Donald Trump and his trade team are in the final phases of concluding the deal. In response to a reporter’s inquiry, she stated, "Yes, the President said that last week, and it remains true. I just spoke to our Secretary of Commerce about it. He was in the Oval Office with the President. They are finalising these agreements, and you'll hear from the President and his trade team very soon when it comes to India."
Additionally, Leavitt addressed a question from Indian news agency ANI about China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific and its impact on US-India relations. She remarked, "India remains a very strategic ally in the Asia Pacific and the President has a very good relationship with Prime Minister Modi, and he will continue to have that."
The potential trade agreement emerges amid increasing US initiatives to bolster partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region to counteract China's economic and military sway. Experts suggest that a comprehensive accord with India would not only enhance bilateral trade but also fit into Washington's larger geopolitical strategy.
Although no specific timeline was disclosed, Leavitt’s comments strongly suggest that behind-the-scenes efforts are well advanced, and a formal announcement could be forthcoming soon.
