New Delhi, May 10, 2026 — Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, who is currently the Vice Chief of Naval Staff, has been designated as the next Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, based in Mumbai. This key appointment places him at the forefront of one of the Indian Navy’s most crucial commands, which is tasked with the defense of India’s western maritime boundaries and significant sea routes in the Arabian Sea.

Distinguished Career and Expertise

Vice Admiral Vatsayan, a specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems, boasts a naval career that spans over 38 years. He was commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988, and is a graduate of the National Defence Academy in Pune. His service history encompasses a variety of operational, command, and staff roles, providing him with extensive knowledge in frontline operations and strategic planning.

Operational and Command Experience

During his career, Vice Admiral Vatsayan has been assigned to several leading warships, including being a part of the commissioning crew for INS Mysore and INS Nishank. He has commendably commanded various naval platforms, such as the missile vessels INS Vibhuti and INS Nashak, the missile corvette INS Kuthar, and the guided missile frigate INS Sahyadri, where he was the commissioning commanding officer.

In February 2020, he took over as Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, overseeing several operational deployments and exercises during a period of increased maritime activity following the Galwan crisis.

Strategic and Staff Contributions

At Naval Headquarters, Vice Admiral Vatsayan has occupied significant policy and planning roles, including Director Naval Plans (Perspective Planning) and Principal Director Naval Plans. After his promotion to Flag Rank in 2018, he served as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans). He later became the Deputy Commandant of the National Defence Academy and Chief of Staff of the Eastern Naval Command.

Before taking the position of Vice Chief of Naval Staff in August 2025, he worked at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff in senior operational and policy capacities, where he was involved in coordinating operations, force development, and policies promoting indigenisation across the armed forces.

In 2021, he received the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in recognition of his distinguished service.

As one of the Indian Navy’s leading operational commands, the Western Naval Command plays a crucial role in overseeing India's western seaboard.
