Tata Advanced Systems Emerges as L1 Bidder for ₹20,000 Crore Zorawar Light Tank Project
New Delhi, 10 September 2026 — Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) has won the Ministry of Defence contest to develop a next-generation 25-tonne class light tank for the Indian Army under Project Zorawar, emerging as the lowest bidder in the competition for the programme, which is valued at about ₹20,000 crore. The project is being pursued under the Make-I category and is aimed at giving the Army a highly mobile armoured vehicle for high-altitude and other difficult terrain.
According to the source article, the selection came after a three-year evaluation of technical and commercial bids submitted by five corporate entities. Mahindra Defence Systems finished as the second-lowest bidder, or L2, and will also be asked to develop a prototype. TASL has been assigned the task of building and demonstrating two operational prototypes within 130 weeks.
Why the Army wants a light tank
Project Zorawar is linked to the Army’s Armoured Fighting Vehicle–Indian Light Tank, or AFV-ILT, requirement. The need is driven largely by the operational realities of high-altitude sectors such as Ladakh, where heavier main battle tanks like the T-72 and T-90 face limits in mobility, logistics and performance in oxygen-thin conditions.
The Army’s overall requirement is commonly cited at 354 light tanks. An initial tranche of 59 tanks has already been assigned to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in partnership with Larsen & Toubro. The remaining roughly 295 vehicles have been placed under the competitive Make-I process, which has now narrowed to TASL and Mahindra for prototype development. After the prototypes are assessed, production orders are expected to be split between the two companies.
The light tank is named after General Zorawar Singh Kahlon, also known as Zorawar Singh Kahluria, a 19th-century Dogra commander who led campaigns in Ladakh, Baltistan and western Tibet. The name reflects the vehicle’s intended role in Himalayan warfare and other mountain operations.
How the Make-I process works
The programme is being implemented under the Defence Ministry’s Make-I category, which is designed to promote indigenous design and development. Under this framework, the government can fund up to 70 per cent of prototype design and development costs, with the broader aim of encouraging private-sector participation and reducing dependence on imports.
The production order had been delayed after objections were raised by a rival bidder. Those objections were examined by the Indian Army and the Ministry of Defence, but were not upheld, allowing the process to move ahead. The arrangement is notable because, for the first time, a private-sector company will fully design and build a battle tank for the Indian armed forces.
What the 25-tonne tank is expected to do
The new light tank is intended to be rapidly deployable, including by air. The source notes that two vehicles can be carried in an Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster III, giving the Army a platform that can be moved quickly to remote sectors.
Reported features of the existing DRDO–L&T Zorawar design, which informs the wider programme, include a 105 mm high-pressure rifled gun with autoloader, a remote weapon station, and the ability to carry Nag Mk-II anti-tank guided missiles or loitering munitions. The design also includes modular armour with STANAG 4569 Level 4 frontal protection, an active protection system, amphibious capability, and a high power-to-weight ratio to improve mobility in mountainous terrain.
While high-altitude deployment is the principal requirement, the tank is also intended for use in deserts, marshlands and riverine terrain. That gives the Army a lighter alternative to conventional main battle tanks across a wider range of operational environments.
Implications for private industry
TASL’s emergence as L1 and Mahindra’s parallel role in prototype development strengthen the role of Indian private industry in complex armoured vehicle programmes. Keeping both firms in the process preserves competition and provides redundancy in the supply chain, while also ensuring that the Army will have more than one design to assess before any large-scale production decision is taken.
The 130-week prototype timeline will be a key test of whether the companies can meet both the technical requirements and the schedule laid down under the Make-I framework. More broadly, the project is part of the effort to expand domestic design and production of major land systems and field a purpose-built light tank for service along India’s northern borders.
