Surgeon Vice Admiral Shankar Subramanian Takes Over as Director General Medical Services (Navy)
Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services, extended her congratulations to Surgeon Vice Admiral Shankar Subramanian as he assumed the role of Director General Medical Services (Navy) on May 11, 2026.
Surg VAdm Subramanian, an alumnus of the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune and a gold medalist from Pune University in 1988, is highly regarded for his expertise as a physician, academic, researcher, and leader in military medicine.
He specializes in Medicine and has received advanced training in Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.
Before stepping into his current role as DGMS (Navy), he served as Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Medical) at the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff. Throughout his career, he has held significant positions, including Head of the Department of Medicine at AFMC Pune, Commandant of Command Hospital Air Force Bengaluru, and Principal Medical Officer at Headquarters Eastern Air Command.
His new appointment underscores the ongoing commitment to enhancing medical leadership and healthcare capabilities within the Indian Navy and the wider Armed Forces Medical Services.
