Son of Kargil Veteran Joins Indian Navy, Prioritizes Military Service Over IIM Offers
In a remarkable tale of resilience and dedication, Ritesh Kumar Singh, the son of a Kargil War veteran, has been commissioned as a Sub Lieutenant in the Indian Navy. This achievement marks him as the first commissioned military officer from his village, Raghodihara, located in Bihar's Rohtas district.
His accomplishment, officially realized on May 28, has generated immense pride among the villagers and the surrounding areas. Residents have been celebrating the success of this young man, who opted for a military career over lucrative opportunities in the corporate and management sectors.
Ritesh, the younger son of retired Subedar Janardan Singh, who served in the Indian Army for nearly thirty years and took part in the Kargil War, found inspiration in his father's disciplined and patriotic military career. From a young age, Ritesh aspired to become an officer, a dream that has now come to fruition.
The commissioning ceremony was a deeply emotional event for his family, where his parents had the honor of placing the naval stars on his shoulders, symbolizing the end of a journey marked by hard work and sacrifice.
Ritesh began his quest for a military career while still in Class 10. The path was fraught with challenges, as he reportedly underwent over 10 Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews before finally succeeding. His journey demonstrates remarkable perseverance and determination, as he continually refined his approach after each setback. This persistence was finally rewarded with his selection for the Indian Navy in June 2025.
On the academic front, Ritesh has consistently demonstrated excellence. He completed his schooling at Army Public School Prayagraj and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Allahabad. His performance in the CAT examination was notable, achieving around a 90 percentile score. This accomplishment opened doors to the Indian Institute of Management Amritsar and Indian Institute of Management Bodh Gaya for him.
Nevertheless, conscious of his family's financial constraints and motivated by his commitment to serve the nation, he chose to pursue an MBA at Banaras Hindu University while still striving towards a military career.
Ritesh's family is characterized by success, with his elder brother, Vikas Kumar Singh, holding a B.Tech degree and currently leading a team at Infosys.
The achievements of both brothers have brought recognition to their family and village. Ritesh’s commissioning serves as a strong source of inspiration for other aspiring defense candidates in the region.
