Search Operation Intensifies in Basantgarh Amidst Hunt for Jaish-e-Mohammad Terrorists

A significant search operation is currently underway in the dense forests of Basantgarh, located in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district, as authorities hunt for three Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists. This follows the killing of a Pakistani terrorist in a fierce gunfight with security forces the previous day.
The operation, conducted by the Indian Army's Para Commandos alongside local police, recommenced early Friday morning. The search efforts are being intensified with the use of drone surveillance and sniffer dog units. The area is heavily cordoned off with additional forces deployed, focusing on the Karoor Nallah area where the terrorists are suspected to be hiding.
The confrontation began on Thursday when a joint patrol encountered four heavily armed terrorists after a year-long surveillance operation. The militants, aided by local overground workers (OGWs), have been utilizing forested areas and natural caves to evade capture. One of the terrorists killed has been identified as Haider, also known as Maulvi, a JeM operative based in Pakistan.
Authorities have reported that in recent months, five OGWs who provided logistical support to the militants have been apprehended. Intelligence reports suggest that a local individual who returned from Pakistan might be assisting the group in navigating the area.
Basantgarh is recognized for its challenging terrain and serves as a known infiltration route for Pakistan-backed militants entering the region from the International Border in Kathua, using high-altitude paths towards Doda, Kishtwar, and the Kashmir Valley.
The area has seen multiple high-profile terrorist incidents over the past year. In April, Havaldar Jhantu Ali Shaikh of 6 PARA was killed in an encounter. Previous incidents in 2024 included attacks on security forces and the killing of a village defense guard, with several JeM operatives being neutralized in separate operations.
Security forces remain on high alert as the search for the remaining three terrorists continues in the forested region of Basantgarh. Authorities are determined to restore peace and prevent further incursions in the area.
