Royal Navy Monitors Russian Corvette in English Channel Amid Increased Activity

In a concentrated operation lasting four days in June 2025, the British Royal Navy deployed its warships and helicopters to monitor and escort Russian naval vessels as they transited through the English Channel and the North Sea. This operation demonstrated the UK's dedication to maritime security and its commitment to NATO vigilance. Central to this mission were the Type 45 destroyer HMS Duncan and the River-class offshore patrol vessel HMS Mersey. They were tasked with shadowing the Russian Steregushchiy-class corvette RFN Boikiy as it moved eastward through the Channel.
On June 20, HMS Duncan intercepted the Boikiy near the island of Ushant, located off the French coast. The following day, HMS Mersey took over escort duties off the Isle of Wight, allowing Duncan to continue its training activities. The Boikiy, part of the Russian Baltic Fleet, is a stealthy, multi-role corvette armed with Uran anti-ship missiles, Redut surface-to-air missiles, torpedoes, a 100mm naval gun, and a Ka-27 helicopter designed for anti-submarine and surveillance missions.
This operation came after the Royal Navy had previously tracked the Russian frigate RFN Admiral Grigorovich alongside other Russian naval activities, indicating increased Russian naval presence near UK waters. Uniquely, the Boikiy was noted to use a disguised identification signal while accompanying two Russian oil tankers that are under Western sanctions, signaling a significant shift in Russia's maritime strategy.
UK Minister for the Armed Forces Luke Pollard reiterated the Royal Navy's commitment to shadowing Russian warships near British waters and emphasized the importance of protecting vital infrastructure, such as undersea cables. Commander Daniel Lee of HMS Duncan stressed the strategic significance of these missions in ensuring national security and adhering to international maritime law.
The heightened presence of the British Royal Navy underscores growing concerns over Russian assertiveness in key maritime corridors. Advanced platforms like HMS Duncan and HMS Mersey play crucial roles in maintaining vigilance and deterrence in the English Channel and nearby seas.
