President Murmu Inaugurates First PBG Soldierathon from Rashtrapati Bhavan
New Delhi, August 2, 2026: President Droupadi Murmu today virtually inaugurated the first President’s Bodyguard (PBG) Soldierathon during a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan's Forecourt. General (Dr) V.K. Singh (Retd), Governor of Mizoram and the event's patron, was present. A Special Postal Cover was also released by the President to mark this significant occasion.
The race was held at the Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment, themed “Supporting Real Heroes – the Armed Forces of India.” The Soldierathon aims to foster connections between civilians and the Armed Forces, honoring soldiers' bravery and dedication while encouraging citizens to participate actively in expressing solidarity.
In a social media reflection, the President highlighted the Soldierathon's role in bringing the Armed Forces closer to civilians. The event aligns with national efforts to promote fitness, discourage drug use, and instill national pride, all while honoring those who serve the country.
A Tribute to the President’s Own
The inaugural PBG Soldierathon celebrates the President’s Bodyguard's 253-year history, the oldest regiment in the Indian Armed Forces. Established in 1773 as the Governor’s Bodyguard under Governor-General Warren Hastings, it underwent several name changes during the colonial era before becoming the President’s Bodyguard with the Constitution's adoption in 1950.
The PBG is uniquely recognized as the world's only Airborne Cavalry Regiment. Its personnel, trained as paratroopers and tankmen, also perform ceremonial duties as horsemen. They serve as the President’s personal troops and household cavalry, providing both ceremonial escort and protection while maintaining operational readiness. The regiment continues to serve in challenging environments like the Siachen Glacier, with a strength of over 200 personnel and about 100 horses, combining traditional equestrian skills with modern military capabilities.
The Soldierathon coincides with the 27th anniversary of the 1999 Kargil War, adding an element of remembrance for the valor displayed by the Indian Armed Forces in that conflict.
Race Details and Wider Impact
The Soldierathon included races of 3 km, 5 km, and 10 km, inviting seasoned runners, new participants, families, students, and corporate teams to join. Participants had the chance to run alongside serving soldiers and witness military culture, including performances by the Indian Army. This event is part of the broader Soldierathon movement, promoted by Fitistan, embodying service, discipline, and national spirit. Major (Dr) Surendra Poonia, VSM, former Special Forces member and PBG alumnus, founded the Soldierathon as a tribute to the regiment that instilled in him values of courage, discipline, and selfless service.
The PBG Soldierathon's proceeds will benefit the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre of the Armed Forces, aid wards of battle casualties, and support other soldier-centric causes. A portion is specifically allocated to support the President’s Bodyguard's horses and troops, preserving their operational readiness and equestrian traditions. Wonder Cement played a significant role as a partner for the Delhi edition.

General V.K. Singh's presence, a former Chief of Army Staff and Mizoram's Governor, highlighted the event's importance. As a long-time advocate of bridging the gap between the armed forces and civilians, he served as the Soldierathon initiative's patron. The ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan's Forecourt, with military personnel in ceremonial attire, provided a sense of dignity and tradition to the flag-off.
The Soldierathon carries a message beyond running: it encourages citizens to stand with the nation’s “real heroes.” It combines fitness, remembrance, and tangible support for welfare, reinforcing national security and military heritage as shared responsibilities.
