A Pakistan Air Force officer, Group Captain Asim Tariq, was fatally shot on Sunday afternoon while attempting to prevent the alleged abduction of a woman near Shaheen Chowk on Ninth Avenue in Islamabad.

Police reports indicate that the incident took place near Bahria University and Air University, within the jurisdiction of Margalla Police Station. Group Captain Asim Tariq, son of Muhammad Tariq, was driving through the area when he noticed a motorcyclist, identified as Saad, allegedly trying to force a woman onto his vehicle. Saad is reported to be a colleague of the woman.

Group Captain Tariq stopped his vehicle to intervene and assist the woman. During the altercation, the woman sought refuge by the officer’s car. The suspect, armed, argued with Group Captain Tariq before firing a shot that proved fatal. The officer died on the spot from his injuries.

The suspect fled the scene immediately in his vehicle. Police officers, including Additional SHO Siddiq and duty officer Naveed from Margalla Police Station, arrived promptly. They secured the area and took the woman into protective custody. She provided a statement identifying the suspect as a workplace colleague who initially offered her a ride but became aggressive when she resisted his actions.

Official Response and Investigation

The Islamabad Police have registered a case and are actively searching for the suspect, setting up checkpoints and conducting raids throughout the city. The investigation is ongoing.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed his condolences to the officer's family and has requested a comprehensive report from the Inspector General of Islamabad Police. He has urged the authorities to ensure the quick arrest of the suspect and the delivery of justice.

The body of Group Captain Asim Tariq was taken to a Pakistan Air Force hospital. He leaves behind a widow, a son, and a daughter.
