Operation Bihali: Indian Army and J&K Police Tackle Militants in Udhampur's Basantgarh

In the Bihali region of Basantgarh within Udhampur district, a joint anti-terror operation named 'Operation Bihali' is in progress. Initiated by the Indian Army in collaboration with Jammu & Kashmir Police, the operation commenced this morning following specific intelligence reports of terrorist presence in the area.

Security forces have engaged with the suspected militants, resulting in an ongoing exchange of fire. The area has been secured, and additional forces have been sent to ensure the threat is neutralized.

The timing of this operation is particularly crucial, as it precedes the Amarnath Yatra scheduled to begin on July 1. With large numbers of pilgrims expected for the annual event, security has been heightened across Jammu and Kashmir with measures such as multi-layered security grids and enhanced surveillance systems.

This year, preparations include the use of drones, AI-based facial recognition technology, and extensive ground security personnel. The operation aims to thwart any potential disruptions during the pilgrimage, which has historically been a target for terrorist actions.

Udhampur's strategic location near the Line of Control and its history with terrorist activities underscore its importance. In 2017, a notable attack by Jaish-e-Mohammed on Amarnath pilgrims resulted in 11 fatalities, highlighting the necessity for early intelligence and decisive action.

According to the South Asia Terrorism Portal, over 180 terror groups have been active in Jammu and Kashmir over the past two decades. The year 2022 alone saw more than 200 civilian deaths due to terrorism in the region. Operations like Bihali are vital components of the ongoing efforts by security forces to prevent infiltration and protect civilian lives.

The situation continues to be closely monitored by authorities, with further updates anticipated as joint forces persist in their operations in the Basantgarh sector.
