NCERT Integrates Stories of Indian Military Heroes Manekshaw, Usman, and Sharma into School Curriculum

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) syllabus will now include the stories of three prominent Indian military heroes—Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Brigadier Mohammad Usman, and Major Somnath Sharma—from this academic year.

Field Marshal Manekshaw's story will be introduced in Class VIII Urdu, Brigadier Usman's in Class VII Urdu, and Major Sharma's in Class VIII English. These chapters aim to inspire students by showcasing exceptional leadership, courage, and dedication to duty through the real-life examples of these military figures.

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, renowned for his strategic acumen during the 1971 war, was the first Indian officer to achieve the esteemed rank of Field Marshal. Brigadier Mohammad Usman, posthumously awarded the Mahavir Chakra, along with Major Somnath Sharma, the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, are celebrated for their ultimate sacrifices in the defense of the nation, symbolizing valor and commitment.

This educational measure is part of a collaborative initiative by the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Education, and NCERT to incorporate references to the National War Memorial (NWM) into school curricula. Situated near India Gate and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 25, 2019, the NWM commemorates those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the country.

According to officials, these narratives are expected to enhance students' understanding of India's military past while promoting values like resilience, empathy, and patriotism.
