Mizoram Governor VK Singh Commemorates Assam Regiment’s 84th Raising Day in Aizawl

Mizoram Governor General (Retired) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, presided over the 84th Raising Day celebrations of the Assam Regiment on Monday. The ceremony, held at the War Memorial in Treasury Square, Aizawl, paid tribute to the regiment's valorous history, particularly highlighting its pivotal involvement in the Battle of Kohima during World War II.
Governor Singh, a former Army Chief lauded for his counterinsurgency efforts in the Northeast, laid a wreath at the memorial to honor the soldiers who sacrificed their lives. His participation underscored profound respect for the regiment’s significant contributions to national defense and the ongoing inspiration it provides.

After the ceremony, a tea gathering was organized at the Assam Rifles Ground, where the governor engaged with ex-servicemen and senior officers. This informal meeting fostered camaraderie and offered a moment to reflect on the regiment's history and its enduring importance in India's military heritage.
The Assam Regiment, established in 1941, gained national acclaim during the Burma Campaign of World War II. Its resolute defense during the Battle of Kohima in 1944 is celebrated as a critical juncture that stopped the Japanese advance into India. Despite heavy casualties, the regiment's perseverance against formidable adversities earned it legendary recognition.

The event was graced by prominent figures, including Brigadier Pushpendar Sorayan, Deputy Inspector General of HQ 23 Sector Assam Rifles, and Padma Shri awardee Hav Lalbiakthanga, president of the World War II Veterans’ Association. Their presence brought historical and emotional significance to the festivities.
Recently, Mizoram has enhanced its support for veterans through innovative welfare programs. Since 2020, the state has augmented funding for ex-servicemen by 15% and implemented policies to facilitate their integration into civilian life. These measures include educational and employment concessions, as well as exemptions from certain qualification requirements for veterans with over three years of service.
The Raising Day celebration not only commemorated the Assam Regiment’s past but also reaffirmed Mizoram’s dedication to the welfare of its veterans, ensuring that the sacrifices of the regiment's heroes are continually honored and cherished.
